Why firms choose Source Doc

Built for retrieval. Designed for trust.

Source Doc gives your team a secure, source-first way to search existing records — from current matter files to years-old scanned archives.

No migration required

Keep your documents where they are. Source Doc connects read-only to the folders you approve and builds its own searchable index.

Source-cited results

See the exact file, page number, and matching passage for every hit — then open the source. No summaries you have to take on faith.

Read-only access

Source Doc never edits, moves, or deletes source files. Originals stay under your control, in your Microsoft 365 or file server.

OCR for scanned archives

Turn old paper and image-only PDFs into searchable records. Text-native files are indexed directly, so backfills stay fast.

Matter-aware search

Search by client, address, closing date, party, counsel, or keyword. Results are enriched with parties, key dates, and matter context.

Fast onboarding

Connect, index, and start searching quickly — most firms are live without a dedicated IT department. Guided setup is included.

Speed that keeps work moving

Search results, often in under half a second.

Move from a question to the source without losing your train of thought.

256–304 msServer-reported retrieval time across five repeated searches in a 5,984-document archive.
How we measured

Five queries against the 5,984-document, 105,710-passage archive on September 7, 2026. The initial pass took 293–1,463 ms server time; repeating the same queries took 256–304 ms (266–339 ms API round trip). Six of ten calls were under half a second. Query, cache state, archive size, and load affect time. This is a demo observation, not a 50,000-document benchmark or a guarantee.

How Source Doc works

Connect. Index. Search. Open the source.

Five steps from “where is that closing?” to the exact page — with nothing moved and nothing changed.

Connect approved folders

Connect Microsoft 365 (OneDrive, SharePoint) with read-only access. Our team assists with SFTP setup.

Index and OCR

Digital files and scanned archives are processed into searchable records on a dedicated retrieval appliance.

Extract metadata

Parties, addresses, matter clues, key dates, counsel, and document type are identified for every file.

Search with context

Search by client, address, matter, closing date, or keyword — plain language works.

Open the source

View the exact file, snippet, and page, with the matched passage highlighted, plus related documents.

The product

Every result answers “where did that come from?”

The primary interaction is search and retrieval, not chat. Analysis is optional and always downstream of a cited source.

Bring your own AI

Let AI analyze the evidence.
Let Source Doc find it.

A folder of 50,000 documents is an archive to index, control access to, and keep current. Source Doc prepares that archive for search, then retrieves relevant records for your question. Use the browser on its own, or connect a compatible Claude, ChatGPT, or other AI client through MCP.

Your AI can work with selected source material instead of being asked to read the whole archive again. Check its answer against the file and page references.

What would reading 50,000 files cost? About $200
for one full pass

That is the AI's input bill for 100 million tokens — assuming 2,000 tokens of text per document, at Claude Sonnet 5's standard $2 per million input tokens.

About 50 minutes of API capacity: processing 100 million new tokens at a 2-million-token-per-minute allowance uses roughly 50 minutes of that allowance, before extra work and retries.

Find first, analyze second: 10 relevant passages of 500 tokens each total 5,000 tokens — about one cent of input at the same rate. Source Doc browser search needs no separate AI subscription.

How to read this estimate

This is a full-archive workload example, not an average time to find a document or a speed promise. Finding an early match can be faster. Indexed AI tools avoid full reads; caching and batching can lower cost. Output, instructions, metadata, OCR, indexing, and extra fetches add work. Actual model speed, account limits, and document lengths vary. Prices and published rate limits checked September 7, 2026.

Find evidence without a folder-by-folder hunt

An unindexed folder asks an AI to work out where to look, open files, and keep track of what it has read. Source Doc has already prepared a searchable index: describe what you need and inspect the ranked files and matching pages. A citation gives you something concrete to verify.

Retrieval built for your archive

Source Doc indexes approved sources, applies OCR and matter metadata, and syncs changes. Hybrid search and relevance ranking find candidates; file, page, and passage references let you inspect the evidence. No separate AI subscription is needed for browser search.

Control what people and AI see

Member scopes are enforced on the server for search and document access. MCP tokens inherit their owner's scope and can be revoked. Login and retrieval events feed your firm's audit trail, supporting oversight as the team grows.

Your archive, ready for answers. Source Doc brings lightning-fast retrieval, connected storage, OCR, matter context, scoped access, and an activity trail into one managed workflow. Your team gets to the evidence quickly; your chosen AI can work from the relevant records. No custom search pipeline for your firm to build and maintain.

Background: long-context limitations · retrieval and relevance ranking · Claude API pricing · API rate limits.

Connect an AI client with MCP

Create a personal access token in Source Doc, add the MCP connection to a compatible client, and review that client's data terms. Search and fetch are read-only; verify generated answers against the records.

Answers to common questions

Clear answers for firms evaluating secure document retrieval.

Can we try Source Doc before signing up?

Yes. Try it now opens Alder & Finch Law with a guided tour you can skip or restart. Search the demonstration archive and open labeled sample PDF previews without a card or Microsoft sign-in. The demo cannot change files or access protected originals.

Do we need IT to set this up?

Source Doc walks you through setup: verify your email, choose a plan, then connect Microsoft 365 and select the folders or libraries to index. Your provider handles authentication; Source Doc never needs your storage password. Some organizations require their Microsoft administrator to approve access. SFTP connections use assisted onboarding with our team.

Will Source Doc change our files?

No. Source Doc uses read-only access. It never moves, edits, or deletes source files. It creates a secure search index so your team can retrieve documents faster while leaving the originals where they are.

Can it handle large archives?

Yes. Source Doc indexes documents first, then syncs changes incrementally. It is designed for large approved archives, including 20,000+ documents, scanned PDFs, and years of matter files. Initial backfills of very large scanned archives are staged so day-to-day search stays fast.

Do we need to migrate into a new DMS?

No. Keep your files where they are. Source Doc is built to work as a retrieval layer over approved folders in OneDrive, Microsoft 365, SharePoint, or an SFTP share, so firms can search existing records without a major migration.

How is it different from Copilot or Claude?

Source Doc prepares your approved archive for repeatable retrieval: OCR, searchable metadata, incremental updates, source references, and matter-level permissions. A basic chat over uploaded files depends on what was supplied and what fits in context. Some AI products already use retrieval, too. Compare how they index your storage, enforce permissions, record activity, and let you verify the original. Use Source Doc in the browser, or connect a compatible AI client through MCP for analysis of selected records.

Where is our data, and who can see it?

Each private customer archive lives in its own isolated bucket behind its own key on a dedicated retrieval appliance — never pooled with other customers and never used to train models. Inside your firm, owners control who can see which matters, and the same rules apply to any AI token. Demo workspaces share only our approved demonstration archive. The security overview has the details.

What does a pilot look like?

We connect one approved folder set, index it, and give your team access — typically within a few days. You search real matters against real files and decide with evidence. Pilots run on an evaluation workspace at no charge; standard onboarding is included when you choose Starter, Practice, or Vault.
